How To Handle The Pandemic?: 5 Potential Ramifications

A pandemic, such as the Coronavirus, we are currently witnessing, is different from an epidemic, in that, it usually spreads throughout a large area, and/ or, nearly the entire world, and, the number of infected individuals, is uncertain, and/ or unstable. There are many theories, as to the best course of action, but, all of these, have some sort of side effects, and/ or, ramifications. Since, no one can see into the future, it only makes sense, for public leaders/ officials, to carefully plan, and pursue the best course of action, while preparing for potential ramifications, With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, 5 potential ramifications, of these actions, with the intention, of, hopefully, being, as prepared, as possible, and, thus, reduce adverse impacts.
1. Short - term national: In today's global economy, it is often, challenging, to differentiate between national and international economic ramifications. There is little doubt, that many industries, will suffer! In New York City, closing Broadway, Madison Square Garden, etc, has a serious financial impact. Closing restaurants, and bars, will certainly harm these businesses, While those, with deeper - pockets, may suffer, but be strong enough, to handle these short - term woes, many smaller companies, individual smaller restaurants and bars, and, especially, retail outlets, are, at - risk! Major economic analysts have, already, proclaimed, without government help (bail - out), many airlines, may go bankrupt. The United States proposals, to - date, have addressed, providing banks, etc, with easier access to funds, by reducing the Federal Reserve Rate, to close to 0%. However, it is important to recognize, this is the rate banks borrow at, and, does not automatically, translate to their lending practices (because, often, in the past, banks have not always been the most responsible, caring citizens). Although the House of Representatives has passed some short - term legislation (and the President claims he supports these), thus far, the Senate has not rushed - to - the - rescue. With, an already huge federal deficit, the longer - term impacts, may become seriously complicated, and, potentially, risky!
2. Health/ medical: At the end of 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO), offered testing kits, which our government, declined, at the time. Our nation has been seriously behind, many other nations, because, to - date, few have been tested, and, thus, our efforts are hindered! While Australia, and several other nations, have created, and using, drive - through, testing stations, we are only, beginning to do so! How many will be, at - risk, exactly how much of a health - danger, this actually is, etc, are all, issues, we need to evaluate! While, it is probably, far better, to be safe, than sorry, what will this do, for the future of retail, health care, and many other businesses, etc?
3. Worldwide economy: There is little doubt, we will witness a serious impact on the worldwide economy! The supply - chain, which was, already, under - siege, because of many of President Trump's trade policies and tariffs, is nearly, closed, in the short - term! With few international air flights, many borders closed, and markets, throughout the world, affected, we will feel these impacts, for a prolonged period!
4. Precedent: If, we learn from this pandemic, and become better prepared, in the future, something valuable, will come out of this! It demonstrates, perhaps, more than ever, we live in a global world, where what happens, somewhere else, has a huge impact, into the future, and everywhere, so, there should be no place for vitriol, rhetoric, or polarization, etc! How we behave, today, will, either, be a positive, or negative rhetoric!
5. Will it bring - on, a prolonged recession?: After, over a decade, without a recession, and, considering, many anticipated a recession, in the somewhat, near - future, before this happened, how might this worldwide, near, shutdown, affect the worldwide economy, and for how long, into the future?
While the health of our citizens, and those, living, throughout the world, should be, of paramount importance, and the top priority, we need to be prepared, for the future! It is the responsibility of the public, to demand, their public officials, prepare better, and prioritize, health, and well - being!
